Leeds Grand Mosque Appeal
Support your local mosque – help is needed urgently

Muslims - a rope has no strength until it is woven with thousands of threads

There is no simpler way to say it - we need help. The Mosque is in debt and has virtually no funds. There is hardly enough money to pay for the gas and electric bills. We cannot even afford to pay for the buildings insurance. Our basements are flooded, our roof is in need of repair. Our heating system is failing.

Shocked? Of course you are. You thought the Grand Mosque was WEALTHY. Run by Arabs, funded by a Billionaire Sheikh? - Unfortunately Not - The Mosque relies on donations from our community, from our worshipers, from people like you, both individuals and organisations, no matter if you are a student or a rich businessman. (The donations received from abroad cover only the costs of the Ifthari programme in Ramadan and the Eid gifts for the children).

There are no secrets – this is your Mosque, so we would like to present you with some basic FACTS:

  •  Weekly donations to the Mosque currently add up to an average of £250 a week. (or £12,000 per year)

  •  The Mosque needs in the region of £3,300 per month (or nearly £40,000 per year) simply to pay running costs.

  •  We have between 500–600 people in Friday congregation – which means that if every individual gave us £2.00 (yes TWO POUNDs) every week, we would have sufficient funds to at least pay the overheads of the mosque.

  • The mosque encourages a family environment and this is reflected in the attendance of sisters and children.

  • The Jamaat (congregation) is multi-cultural and a reflection of the global Ummah.

  • There are more reverts to Islam from this mosque, than any other mosque in Leeds. On average one brother / sister takes Shahadah at the Mosque every month.

Future Plans
We have plans to make this an even greater mosque, but we cannot do this without funding. We want to install more fire exits, provide disabled access, install a multi-media system to visually present the Khutbahs in different languages to all. We want to refurbish a derelict flat at the back of the mosque so that we can generate our own income by renting it to student Muslims.

Transparency
The Mosque is committed to ensuring that all it’s financial affairs are completely open for inspection at any time. Financial information will now be posted on the notice boards around the Mosque and Br Zaher will be willing answer any questions or queries you may have regarding the Mosque.

HOW CAN I HELP?

  1. By filling out a standing order form for a regular amount each month you can make a difference. This is one of the most effective methods of helping us. Even if you can only afford to pay £10 a month. We would urge you ALL to consider this method as it allows us to collect small amounts on a regular basis – ‘The most beloved of deeds to Allah is the one that is continuous, even if it is little’.

  2. By giving generously Sadaqa or a donation will also help the immediate needs of the Mosque.

  3. The holy month of Ramadan is nearly here. Ramadan is a month of fasting and reflection. This is the month when Muslims usually pay their Zakat. Sheikh Abdullah Judai has issued a Fatwa declaring that it is permissible for the Mosque to receive Zakat. This year, please consider paying a proportion of your Zakat to the Leeds Grand Mosque.

  4. Companies or those more financially fortunate can help by donating generously. Perhaps you can sponsor an event or contribute to one of the many capital works that is required within the Mosque.

  5. By donating some of your time to assist the mosque. We need brothers and sisters to help with the fund-raising campaign, to help with the Iftari programme, to serve on the sub-committees - No matter what your background, We want to hear from you.

To keep up to date with events and obtain further information, join the popular Grand Mosque weekly email list, by visiting www.leedsgrandmosque.com and fill in your email address. The website has a wealth of useful information. For Direct contact, please contact the Committee chairman Br Zaher at the mosque or via email on contact@leedsgrandmosque.com.

May Allah reward you in this life and in Paradise with His peace and blessings.

Wassalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh
